Mr. Alexandr Dondukov, Minister of Industry, Science and Technologies of the Russian Federation, announced today that Russia now holds the third place among the world?s manufacturers of high performance supercomputers. Which means that all European countries and China were left behind.

Supercomputer MBC-1000M is a cluster system based on 768 Alpha21264 667 MHz CPUs. The nodes are linked with the high-speed 2Gb/s Myrinet. The peak performance of the system is 1 Tflops, the value that makes up the estimated performance speed of the human brain.

MBC-1000M is designed for a wide range of applications: exploration of mineral resources, design of new aerospace systems, nuclear power engineering and engineering industry, cryptography, etc. MBC-1000M is expected to provide revolutionary changes in nano-technologies ? calculations will be thirty times faster while the complicacy of modeled nano-systems increases.

In the meantime the experts in JSC have already started developing a next generation computer. They are preparing to design MBC-5000, which is supposed to comprise about 1500 CPUs. Another supercomputer will be functioning by 2003.
